The Violin in South India - Feature on TN Krishnan

The violin was brought to India by the British in the 1700s. Around 200 years ago it began to be played by the classical musicians of South India, who changed way the violin was held and retuned the strings to suit the Carnatic style of Indian music.

The Many Flavours of Music on Friday 17 September 2010 from 9 pm will feature the music of Prof. T. N. Krishnan, a violin virtuoso and one of the legends of Indian classical music. Prof Krishnan has been perfoming for the last 75 years and he is currently touring Australia and will be performing in Sydney on 25 September 2010 (see www.pallavi.org for details).

The program playlist will feature several solo tracks of Prof. TN Krishnan. It will also include a couple of examples of him accompanying vocalists. The program will be presented by Mohan Ayyar, a PhD student in music at Macquarie University.

If you can't access the program via FM radio, it is also streamed live on the Radio 2ser website.
